Meeting with the European Commission to discuss issues faced by people with intellectual disabilities and their families

Inclusion Europe meeting with the European Commission to explain what people with intellectual disabilities and their families want from EU disability rights agenda.

On Monday 19 January 2025, Inclusion Europe met with a member of cabinet of European Commissiner Hadja Lahbib.

We explained what changes need to happen in Europe for full rights and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities and their families.

Inge Volleberg talked about Inclusion Indicators and some of the key issues around Europe:

  • People being denied their right to vote;
  • A lot of people with intellectual disabilities being segregated in institutions.
  • Lack of support and housing.
  • Issues with access to healthcare and people’s decisions not being respected.

Freddy Jussien spoke about our expectations for the next stage of the EU Disability Rights Strategy.

Milan Šveřepa talked about the hundreds of thousands of people who are segregated in institutions, and about what the EU could do to support the transition from institutional to community-based care.
